Kimiko Suzuki and her course "Advanced Japanese" present the exhibition "The Power of Words," which showcases indigo dyed textiles made by students in the course. Through various readings and materials on Japanese society and history, the course studies the history of Japanese indigo dyeing, not only appreciating this type of art, but also searching for deeper cultural meaning within. The exhibition balances the preservation of tradition along with welcoming new trends, in addition to engaging in critical thinking about the dichotomous nature of Eastern versus Western culture.

Sponsored by the Bi-Co Japanese Program, the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities, VCAM, and the Tri-Co LIASE Grant.
