Riva Lehrer borrows the concept of "informed consent" from biomedicine in order to pose questions about consent in the context of portraiture, especially portraiture involving subjects who are socially stigmatized. As a portrait artist, anatomist, and disability activist, Riva is motivated by asking how socially devalued bodies are made visible and how portrait-making can intervene in processes of aesthetic, psychological, and sociocultural revaluation.

Sponsored by Haverford College Libraries, the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities' Tuttle Creative Residencies Program, Distinguished Visitors, Health Studies, and the Writing Program.
