To know the Caribbean, to come close to its richness, its diversity -- human, linguistic, and cultural--, to question its present and its past, demands a challenge to our imaginaries about the region. It also demands a sense of humility that allows us to recognize its inexhaustible complexity, but yet as an stimulating challenge. Po├ęticas, archivos y apuestas offers a multiplicity of inputs that allow the Caribbean to be conceived as a material territory, and as a constantly changing cultural and epistemic framework. From its importance as a founding site of Western Modern reason, to the specificity of its cultural practices, product of incessant human contacts, the Caribbean traced by the texts included in this anthology eludes the stereotypical images of a place deprived of history. It goes beyond the image of a location on earth reduced to consumption and a superficial experience of pleasure. The essays selected in this anthology reveal the threads behind constructs that try to reduce the Caribbean to either paradise or hell. Join the editors, Lina and Giselle, in a bilingual conversation about the reasons behind editing this anthology.

This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Libraries and the Office of the Provost.
