She Speaks Underground

By Abigail Harrison ’19

Artist Talk & Opening Reception

Monday, April 15

4:30-6pm

VCAM Presentation Lounge

This winter I spent two weeks in Paonia, a small coal town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where much of my family still lives as miners and retired miners. This exhibition presents my interviews with and photographs of women who have worked in the mines. I garnered a deeper appreciation for the work they have done and the challenges they have faced with recent mine closures. These photos are the beginning of their story, and reconstruct the setting in which their stories have taken place.

Sponsored by the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities Research Stipend and VCAM.
