On Sunday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m., the Concert Artist Series at Haverford College presents LYRIC FEST.  Their program “Carol of Words—Walt Whitman in Song” celebrates the bicentennial of Walt Whitman’s birth and his lasting contribution to American letters and song, and presents 11 new works by 11 composers with commentary by Whitman expert Greg Trupiano, poetry recitation by actor Jim Bergwall, and a preconcert talk by the composers.

This concert will be held in Roberts Hall, Marshall Auditorium.  Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students, $5 for children age 7 -17, and are free to the tri-college community. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Brown Paper Tickets.

As the centerpiece of Carol of Words—Walt Whitman in Song, Lyric Fest is commissioning 10 new songs by 10 composers, and hosting a young-composer competition. The 11 new works will be premiered alongside extant settings of Whitman from composers such as Ernst Bacon, Lee Hoiby, Kurt Weill, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ned Rorem and George Crumb, among others. This concert will feature a quartet of singers, a pianist and four instrumentalists including clarinet, double bass, violin and bassoon. Whitman expert Greg Trupiano will offer commentary on Whitman’s life and work throughout the performance, and actor Jim Bergwall will recite the poetry. A composer talk will precede the concert.  Performers include pianist, founder, and music/artistic director Laura Ward, Amy Van Roekel, Kelly Ann Bixby, Suzanne DuPlantis, Raehann Brice, Lawrence Jones and Sidney Outlaw, with additional artists to be announced.

Commissioning and performing new works is an integral part of Lyric Fest’s mission and programming philosophy. Since its founding, Lyric Fest has commissioned and premiered over 40 new works (solo songs, full cycles and arrangements) by local, regional and nationally recognized composers. Believing that it has an important role to play in the preservation of the art-song concert experience and the genre itself, Lyric Fest is committed to nurturing the creation and performance of new works, and to generating stimulating partnerships with composers. Composers for the Whitman project include Melissa Dunphy, Derek Bermel, Gilda Lyons, James Primosch, David Shapiro, Curt Cacioppo, Glen Roven, Isabella Ness, Raymond Lustig, and Nkeiru Okoye. This exciting slate represents great variety of expression and fresh musical voices together with seasoned song composers.

With the mission-driven goal of educating and inspiring audiences while building community, Lyric Fest invests in opportunities to bring artists and organizations together through thematic programming. Carol of Words—Walt Whitman in Song will connect key literary and music communities while involving listeners in very personal and meaningful ways.
